Over the last few seasons, thousands of people have been hooked on the show "Biggest Loser," which highlights a major weight loss competition where Top Losers Win! Well, at California Family Fitness, we have implemented a similar type of competition amongst our members. It's called The Body Fit Challenge and it's a good ol' fashioned weight loss challenge! The Body Fit Challenge is an 8 week challenge in which participants will meet with their designated trainer twice a week for the first 6 weeks and then finish the final 2 weeks on their own. Participants are broken up into training teams and have the option of participating in weekly weigh-ins. To help them along the way, each participant is given a packet containing nutrition and fitness information, workout trackers, meal planners, weekly weigh- in charts, and nutrition diaries. At the end of this 8 week challenge each club will have their finale event where participants will weigh in for the last time. Winners will be determined by total percent of body weight lost and of course, prizes will be awarded to the top male & female contestant. The Body Fit Challenge successfully started at all of our clubs on Saturday, January 17th! We wish all of our participants good luck! California Family Fitness now has a Health Page on News10.net! Potlucks are a great way to create camaraderie and boost morale in the office, but you can guarantee that typical potluck foods brought to the affair will taste wonderful in your mouth, but look bad on your stomach. Although it may seem unorthodox, creating a "Healthy Potluck Friday" is a novel idea for having the best of both worlds: an event the whole office can enjoy and a meal that will benefit your weight loss goals. Chances are you will not be the only one in your office who would like to see healthy foods being brought into the office, especially after all the holiday confections have been cleared out of the kitchen. Try this on for size: Organize your plan and present it: Schedule a time with your supervisor or human resources representative and present your plan to incorporate "Healthy Potluck Friday" into your office culture. Start it as a once- or twice-a-month affair to get the ball rolling. Get everyone involved: Once you have been given the green light, make sure you get everyone involved. Be creative and enthusiastic. Preparing invitations for the first event will create a positive buzz in your office for the meal. Part of your potluck could be having the participants vote on their favorite dishes, which would appeal to those of your peers who enjoy competition. Beak a Mental & Physical Sweat Getting physically fit not only produces a stronger, healthier you, it also produces a healthier mindset! An abundance of physical activity has been proven to be one of the best ways to ease stress and anxiety while giving you a sense of confidence and well-being when life's activities become overwhelming. This year kick off the new year in a new way, and make the resolution to break a mental sweat with physical activity! Research has shown that exercise increases the level of certain mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain, which boosts feel-good endorphins, releases muscle tension, helps better one's sleep cycle, and reduces levels of stress hormones. By practicing a healthy lifestyle, and incorporating physical activity into your daily schedule, you can effectively reduce sadness, anxiety, irritability, stress, fatigue, anger, and self doubt, all while building muscle tone and reducing fat levels. It's a win, win! Some great ways to improve your body and mind is to try a variety of physical activities such as aerobics, yoga, pilates, or tai-chi. Yoga and tai-chi are known to provide both body and mind benefits, leaving you refreshed and recharged after each class, while aerobics and pilates provide more cardio benefits to get your heart rate up and your blood pumping! The options are endless, so you can pick what best interests and challenges you! Exercise is also a great way to meet people, make new friends, and have fun socializing on a different level. Bonding with new friends over a common fitness goal is rewarding on several levels; you develop a built in workout buddy which can help with staying on track, continually staying motivated, and celebrating common successes. California Family Fitness offers a variety of group exercise classes, and endless state-of-the-art amenities to help you in all of your fitness endeavors! With the new year well underway, now is the perfect time to take your workout to the next level! Incorporating a wide variety of fitness activities into your routine will not only challenge your body and increase your endurance levels, but will also help keep you motivated day after day. As we challenge you to become the new you for the new year, try an X-Bike class at your local California Family Fitness location to spice up your cardio workouts! X-Bike is a new type of stationary bike that incorporates arm and core abdominal muscles into the workout. The handles of the bike adjust laterally, shifting to the left and right, with the weight of your body as you would if biking outdoors. This addition to a standard stationary bike incorporates the muscles of the arms and back as well as targeting balance which is largely controlled by the abdominal muscles. Not only is X-Bike a great full body workout, it also burns almost twice as many calories in the same amount of time as your traditional cycle class and pushes your endurance levels to new heights. In the X-Bike classes offered at California Family Fitness we focus on providing a fun full body cardio workout in just 30 minutes! The guided instruction takes you up hills and gets your rear off the bike seat as you sprint and climb your way through an exciting road ride. The bikes let you control the resistance level, allowing you to push your endurance level as much as you desire while still in the comfort of our group cycle room. Involving Your Children In Meal Time Meal time can be extremely frustrating. Making sure your children are getting all the necessary vitamins and nutrients they need is a process, especially for kids who will not eat foods they don't find appetizing. For children, it is important that their diet contains a variety of healthy foods from the five main food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and protein. Something to consider is having your children become involved in the meal planning so that they have "buy in" as to what foods they would like to eat. You can also use it as a means to make sure your children are not only getting meals they like, but they are also getting meals that keep them healthy. Here are a few tips to get you started: Identify a time for meal planning: Structuring a time that everyone in the family can get together and help identify what meals they would like to eat during the week will save a lot of energy from dealing with unhappy little ones. If you find that your trips to the grocery store occur on Wednesdays, have meal planning on Mondays or Tuesdays. Keep it as consistent as possible. Create a menu template that includes all five food groups: Create a document listing out the five food groups so you can plan accordingly. Be adamant about including all five food groups into your meal plan. Your children will learn about eating nutritiously through strict compliance to this model, and may even discover some healthy foods they like. Research what foods belong in the various categories: Your children may not think they like vegetables, but there are several options in each category that are delicious and nutritious. Check out the USDA's website, mypyramid.gov, to get a good sample of the many foods that can fall into the various categories. Vitamin D FAQ'S It is important all year round to maintain a healthy diet, and to get the recommended amount of essential vitamins and minerals to preserve good health. Vitamin D, most commonly known to come from sun exposure, is crucial to maintain over the winter months when sunlight is limited. This week we'll discuss alternative sources of Vitamin D to ensure you are getting the recommended daily value in our quest to help you become the new you for the new year! Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of your organ systems, and is not naturally produced in the human body. Thus, it is crucial to make sure you receive Vitamin D through sun exposure or through selected foods to maintain optimal health. Good sources of Vitamin D are broken into two categories: foods that have been fortified with Vitamin D and natural sources of Vitamin D. Fortified foods include: milk, yogurt, breakfast cereals, and bread. Other good sources of Vitamin D that naturally contain the vitamin can be found in fish, beef, and eggs. Now that you know the proper sources you may be wondering, how much Vitamin D is right for me? The recommended daily/dietary allowance (RDA) for daily Vitamin D intake is between 5 to 10 mcg (micrograms). Looking at one cup of Vitamin D fortified milk for example, supplies about one-fourth of the estimated daily intake your body needs. As you continue to age, especially for those older than fifty, the daily intake of Vitamin D will increase to ensure your vital organs continue to remain active. We suggest consulting with your local physician or a California Family Fitness nutritionist to inquire more about Vitamin D intake, especially for mature bodies; to obtain all the important FAQ's about this essential vitamin. |
