| Make A Wish | |
| 2800 Club Center Drive, Sacramento, California 95835 | |
| Details: More than 500 volunteers throughout Northeastern California support our mission, working in wish granting, special events, community relations, corporate fund raising, public speaking and many other critical areas. Volunteers work in their local communities by touching the lives of individual Northeastern California children. Experienced volunteers and professional staff provide training and support for newcomers. What You Can Do Whatever role you choose as a Make-A-Wish Foundation of Sacramento and Northeastern California volunteer, the rewards are immeasurable. To touch the life of a special child, to see the wonder in her eyes, to hear his laughter, to know that the parents and siblings have shared a special unforgettable moment, to help create the memory of a lifetime - these are the rewards. Whether you choose to work with our children or behind the scenes making the magic possible, you will know you have been at the center of a dream come true. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Sacramento & Northeastern California is a charitable non-profit organization whose purpose is to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. “The Wishing Place” Where Wishes Will Have a Place to Call Home Imagine a special, magical place where children can escape the rigors of treatment, transplants and never-ending tests. Imagine a place where fear is replaced by hope. Imagine a place where dreams can be discovered and wishes become reality. Imagine “The Wishing Place.” Our Chapter has a vision. It is for a building created especially for wish children. The vision begins the moment a child enters the front door. A “Galaxy of Stars” shines above with stars commemorating each child’s wish. The child will then proceed to “The Wishing Room” where wish decisions will be made. Once that one true wish has been selected, a magical key will open the door to “The Wishing Tower” where the dream begins. When that wish has been voiced, our Wish Coordinator magicians will begin their work making the wish a reality. Soon a proclamation will be sent to announce that the wish is ready, and the wish child and family and friends will be invited to return to “The Wishing Place’s Celebration Hall” where the magic will be unveiled. So what is “The Wishing Place?” It is a place like no other. It is a gathering place where the power of a wish transcends the limitations of a life-threatening condition. It is an inspiring place where special children and their families are enriched by the joys of love and laughter. And finally, “The Wishing Place” gives wishes a place to call home. For more information on how you can help make “The Wishing Place” a reality, contact the chapter office. Types of Wishes Every wish is as different as the children we serve. Although every child imagines an experience uniquely his or her own, there are some common themes among the requests to the Make-A-Wish Foundation: I wish to go... Some children long to visit a special place like Disneyland, the beach or even visit a favorite relative. I wish to be... Others want to "be" a cowboy, a ballerina or a circus performer. I wish to meet... Meeting a beloved hero or celebrity is a common wish. I wish to have... Getting that special something - computer, new bedroom furniture or even art lessons. Timing of Wishes Most wishes are granted within six to nine months, though, in some particularly urgent cases, within hours. Every wish is a unique challenge carried out by the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s network of families, medical professionals, volunteers and donors. The Foundation covers all costs associated with a wish, including transportation, food, lodging and admission fees for the wish child and eligible family members. Referring a Child Every fulfilled wish represents a unique collaboration between wish families, medical professionals, volunteers and donors. Children who may be eligible to receive a wish can be referred by one of three sources: Medical professionals treating the child such as doctors, nurses, social workers or child-life specialists A parent or legal guardian of the child The potential wish child If a relative or friend makes the initial referral, our process is somewhat different. We do not want to intrude on a family's privacy and want them to feel comfortable with the wish process. We ask friends and relatives to speak to the family and encourage them to call us directly. Ways to Contribute Contribute money, goods or services, individually or through your company, school or organization. Individual contributions, corporate support, foundation grants and special events fund the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. The Foundation accepts the donation of securities, automobiles or real estate and deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance and charitable trusts. In-kind contributions of goods and services are also important. All funds raised are used to fulfill the Foundation’s mission in Sacramento and Northeastern California. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® does not engage in either telephone or door-to-door solicitations. Donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.
