| Details: Located in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum is a complex of historic facilities and unique attractions. Widely regarded as North America's most popular railroad museum, there is something here for everyone! Throughout the year, experience lavishly restored trains, engaging exhibits, and unique special events. Every weekend April-September, ride behind a real steam locomotive! First opened to the public in 1976, the California State Railroad Museum complex is one of Sacramento's largest and most popular visitor destinations. Over 500,000 visit the Museum annually, with guests traveling from throughout the world to experience this world-renowned facility. The California State Railroad Museum complex consists of six original, reconstructed, and new buildings completed at a cost of $30 million. The primary exhibit building, the Railroad History Museum, totals 100,000 square feet. Completed at a cost of $16.1 million, it opened in May 1981. With over 225,000 square feet of total exhibit space, the buildings within the California State Railroad Museum complex use stimulating exhibits, enthusiastic and knowledgeable docents, and beautifully restored railroad cars and locomotives to illustrate railroad history in California and the West. Throughout the main Railroad History Museum building, 21 meticulously restored locomotives and cars and numerous exhibits illustrate how railroads have shaped people's lives, the economy, and the unique culture of California and the West. Included are a Pullman-style sleeping car, a dining car filled with railroad china, and a Railway Post Office that visitors can actually step aboard. A visit to the California State Railroad Museum is a not-to-be-missed experience that will be enjoyed by persons of all ages and abilities. But there's a lot more to see and do in Old Sacramento and the Capital City, too! Hours The Museum is open daily (except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day) from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Admission Effective January 1, 2006: $8 adults; $3 youths ages 6-17; children ages 5 and under are free. Cash, personal checks, travelers' checks and the following credit cards are accepted for payment: VISA, MasterCard, and Discover. Location The California State Railroad Museum is located at the corner of Second and "I" Streets in Old Sacramento. Scroll down to "Additional Information" for directions to reach the Museum by automobile and via Amtrak. Parking A small number of limited term, metered parking spaces are available on the streets of Old Sacramento. However, these spaces are not suitable for guests visiting longer then 90 minutes. All-day parking is available in the large public garage at the I Street entrance to Old Sacramento, for a nominal fee. Accessibility The California State Railroad Museum is fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Wherever possible, access to exhibits is facilitated by wheelchair lifts, two-way video communication systems, and our friendly staff. Certain exhibits and programs have limited accessibility, due to factors such as narrow, historic stairways and door openings on railroad passenger cars. For additional details, please contact us. These range from reasonably priced, family-friendly establishments to some of the finest dining experiences available in the Capital City. Taste the Gold Rush - Special Dining Event January 31! California Gold Rush: What We Ate scheduled January 31 California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are partnering with the UC Davis Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine & Food Science to present a unique evening at the Museum on Saturday, January 31. From 6-9 p.m. this evening, history and food will blend together to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the 1849 California Gold Rush. This special event, California Gold Rush: What We Ate, will feature food, beer, wine, music, speakers, and a silent auction. Sacramento Gold Rush historian Jim Henley and Ann Chandonnet, author of Gold Rush Grub, will bring the history of the times to life. An historically accurate meal will be served, showcasing dishes consumed by the miners and denizens of California's Mother Lode. Join us in an exploration of the Gold Rush flavors and dishes that characterized everyday life in the Mother Lode. A commemorative California Common beer from the period will be brewed especially for this event. Barton & Guestier wine from the Bordeaux region of France will be served, from the same winery that supplied some of the first imported wines during the Gold Rush. Tickets are $75 per person.
